How Base64 Encoding Works

Base64 encoding takes binary data and converts every 3 bytes (24 bits) into 4 printable ASCII characters (each 6 bits). The character set consists of A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, and /. Equal signs (=) are added as padding if the payload length is not divisible by 3 bytes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Base64 encoding?
Base64 encoding translates binary data (or text) into an ASCII string of 64 printable characters. It allows binary files or complex text to be transmitted safely over protocols designed to handle text, such as HTTP headers, HTML, and JSON.
Is my text or file stored or sent to any server?
No! ToolsPixel processes everything 100% locally in your browser memory using JavaScript TextEncoder and FileReader. No data is sent over the network.
What is URL-Safe Base64 encoding?
Standard Base64 contains '+' and '/' characters, which can cause encoding issues in URL query strings. URL-safe Base64 replaces '+' with '-' and '/' with '_', making it safe for web URLs.
Why does the encoded Base64 string look larger than the original text?
Base64 encoding adds a ~33% overhead because 3 bytes of raw data are represented using 4 ASCII characters.
